Eficiencia de los bioindicadores de toxicidad sobre contaminantes de aguas residuales industriales

In this paper, we present some important biological factors that modify the efficiency of toxicity bioindicators used to evaluate the harmful effect of industrial wastewater pollutants on biological organisms and processes, such as reproduction, growth and development. The Lactuca sativa model was analyzed and proposal for new biological parameters with fungi, bacteria, plants and animals that can be used as bioindicators of toxicity and ecotoxicity that do not directly compromise the survival of organisms in bioassays and environments contaminated with industrial wastewater effluents.

Double-shell hollow FeCoOx nanozyme-catalyzed colorimetric quantification and discrimination of dihydroxybenzene isomers

Due to the high perniciousness of dihydroxybenzene isomers toward environment and human health, it is imperative to develop simple and rapid strategies for detecting/distinguishing dihydroxybenzene isomers. However, most of the traditional approaches can only respond to single component of dihydroxybenzene isomers, which limits their application in the assay of complex samples. Herein, we develop a colorimetric sensing array based on the peroxidase-like activity of double-shell hollow FeCoOx nanozyme. Since different phenolic substances showed distinct kinetics during the catalytic reaction with the participation of FeCoOx, three different kinds of dihydroxybenzene isomers could be identified by principal component analysis. Moreover, various combinations of mixed dihydroxybenzene isomers with different concentrations can also be completely distinguished within 30min in tap water and environmental water. The method showed a good linear response to catechol, resorcinol, and hydroquinone in the range of 1.5 to 100 µM, 5 to 100 µM, and 1 to 100 µM, respectively, with corresponding detection limit of 1.37 µM, 2.91 μM, and 0.824 μM. Besides, we have constructed a smartphone-based portable platform for analyzing various combinations of mixed dihydroxybenzene in actual water. This work provides a new idea for distinguishing phenolic substances with similar structures, and is promising to identify and monitor phenolic pollutants in industrial wastewater.

Influence of aeration-induced air–water interfaces on pollutant degradation in water treatment: A theoretical and experimental study

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on hydroxyl radicals (OH)-dominant pathway are the most important technologies for the removal of bio-recalcitrant organic pollutants in industrial wastewater. Air–water interface formed by aeration is one of the factors that affect the removal efficiency of pollutants in AOPs. In this work, the mechanistic and kinetic insights into the roles of air–water interface on the hydroxylation of three chlorophenols (CPs) in UV/H2O2 process have been investigated via theoretical calculation and experimental methods. Results show that CPs is more prone to accumulate at the air–water interface as the number of chlorine substituents increases. Consequently, the hydration reaction of CPs occurring at the interfacial influence the electron transfer associated with OH, leading to the non-oxidative consumption of OH. This interfacial reaction diminishes degradation efficiency, resulting in the formation of persistent organic pollutants. Herein, in UV/H2O2 degradation of 2,4,6-TCPs, persistent free radical (PFRs), as well as 1,3,7,9-TCDD and 2,3,6-Trichloro-4-(2,4,6-trichlorophenoxy)phenol, were identified using EPR spectroscopy and LC-Q-TOF-MS mass spectrometry, respectively. Altogether, this work provides a comprehensive understanding of the roles of aeration on OH-initiated degradation behavior of chlorinated phenol pollutants.

Characterization and utilization of industrial wastewater in biorefinery systems: A comprehensive approach

AbstractThis review explores the innovative utilization of industrial effluents in biorefinery applications, addressing the environmental challenges posed by the complex mixture of pollutants in industrial wastewater. It emphasizes the transformation of these effluents into valuable resources, such as biofuels, biochemicals, and bioplastics, through advanced biotechnological processes including anaerobic digestion, fermentation, enzymatic conversion, and microbial biomass production. The study highlights the critical role of microbial biocatalysts in breaking down diverse pollutants and transforming waste into wealth, thereby contributing to sustainable industrial practices and a circular economy. Challenges such as variability in effluent composition, inhibitory substances, and the necessity for robust bioprocesses are discussed, along with suggestions for future research directions like effluent characterization, development of specialized microbial consortia, and effective monitoring and control strategies. The review underscores the importance of collaboration between industry, academia, and government to advance biorefinery technologies, ultimately advocating for a sustainable and resource‐efficient future through the innovative treatment of industrial wastewaters.

Effective visible light-driven binary ZnO catalyst decorated on layered double hydroxides for simultaneous photocatalytic degradation of Ciprofloxacin and Ampicillin

BackgroundThe direct use of clean solar energy to convert organic pollutants in industrial wastewater into harmful products is a viable tactic and a hot topic to save water bodies and avoid water pollution. Pharmaceutical wastewater is complicated and contains a variety of contaminants, making its treatment difficult. MethodThis study focuses on the simultaneous degradation of an aqueous solution containing a combination of contaminants, Ampicillin (AMP) and Ciprofloxacin (CIP). Using hydrothermal process, we successfully fabricated a ZnO-NiCoMn layered double hydroxide (LDH) sheet. The prepared catalyst was examined using a range of surface analytical optical techniques. Significant findingsThe ZnO-NiCoMn LDH demonstrates exceptional photocatalytic performance, as demonstrated by the maximal CIP and AMP degradation rates of 96 % and 94 % in 100 min under visible light, respectively, according to the data. ZnO-adorned NiCoMn LDH sheets exhibited a rod-like structure, as demonstrated by FE-SEM and HR-TEM. Because of the highest charge separation and superior electron (e−) transport between ZnO and NiCoMn LDH material, the binary catalyst degraded CIP and AMP by 96 % and 94 % in 100 min, respectively, more than the bare catalyst. The binary ZnO-NiCoMn LDH catalyst could withstand up to five CIP and AMP degradation cycles.

Malachite green adsorption by Oued Sebou sediment: optimization and desirability analysis

Dye pollution represents an important portion of the pollutants in industrial waste water. Sediment from the Sebou River (Morocco) was utilised in this investigation to adsorb malachite green (MG) in aqueous solution. The optimisation of parameters associated with adsorption was performed by conducting batch adsorption studies and utilising the response surface approach. The adsorption process was accurately described by both the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the maximum capacity for adsorption was determined to be 5.98 mg/g. In addition, the adsorption rate was effectively determined by intraparticle diffusion. The thermodynamic parameters determined in the study revealed that the adsorption of MG dye by the sediment was unspontaneous and endothermic in nature. The regeneration of the sediment in three cycles following adsorption was confirmed. The adsorption process of MG dye onto the sediment was found to be driven by two types of interactions – electrostatic and hydrogen (H) bonding. These results indicate that the sediment has the potential to be an effective adsorbent for removing dyestuffs from contaminated industrial effluent. Moreover, the ready availability of the sediment in the area further enhances its suitability for this purpose.

Effect of Refluxing Time and Kinetics of Synthetic Organic Chemicals Removal in Aqueous Solutions by Carbons Produced from Nipa Palm Fronds

The refluxing time is a significant consideration in synthetic study, because it could reflect the kinetics of the reaction process. Synthetic Organic Chemicals (SOCs) are man-made carbon-based compounds that are not likely to evaporate into the atmosphere and hence they could get into aquatic water bodies through terrestrial runoff or discharge from factories. Therefore, this paper investigated the effect of refluxing time and kinetics of Synthetic Organic Chemicals (SOCs) removal in aqueous solutions by carbonized and surface-modified carbons made from Nipa Palm (<i>Nypa Fruticans </i>Wurmb) fronds using chemical oxygen demand (COD) as the measurement parameter. The data showed a rapid reduction of the COD of the SOCs contaminated solutions from 30.19 to 93.46% for PCC, 27.44 to 65.58% for AAC, 41.84 to 98.22% for BAC and 56.71 to 95.16% for CAC between 10 to 60 mins. Optimum reduction was achieved within 20 min of heating the solutions at 150°C. The rapid COD reduction observed for n-propanol indicates that COD is a rapid, inexpensive means of determining organics in water. Kinetic assessment of the results showed that, pseudo-first order kinetic equation did not provide a very good description of COD reduction of the SOCs in aqueous solution by the Nipa palm derived carbons. However, Nipa palm had been adjudged as a beneficial, eco-friendly and locally available source for the development of activated carbon for elimination of organic pollutants in domestic and industrial wastewaters.

THE ROLE OF ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATION, HETEROGENEOUS TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS ON MUNICIPAL INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER DISCHARGES: EVIDENCE FROM YANGTZE RIVER ECONOMIC BELT IN CHINA

The large amount of industrial wastewater discharges has significantly limited the sustainable development of China’s resources and posed hazards to human health. In order to contain industrial wastewater discharges, the government has formulated a series of environmental control policies, but the effectiveness of these policies remains a controversial issue. With the rapid development of science and technology, how likely can China rely on technological progress to achieve a win-win outcome for both economic growth and environmental protection? This paper uses data from 105 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt over the period 2005–2020 to investigate the effects of environmental regulation and heterogeneous technological progress on industrial wastewater discharges. The results show that environmental regulation and technology introduction effectively reduce industrial wastewater discharges, and independent innovation aggravates industrial wastewater pollution. The interaction analysis reveals that under the influence of environmental regulation, independent innovation will significantly alleviate industrial wastewater discharges in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. In addition, this study also reveals spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the effects of environmental regulations and different types of technological advances on industrial wastewater discharges.

Multivariate optimization of organic matter and color removal from textile dyeing industry wastewater by ultraviolet-activated oxidants

This study investigated the efficiency of ultraviolet (UV) activation of the oxidants that are used in advanced oxidation processes in textile dyeing industry wastewater treatment with high concentrations of refractory organic matter and strong color. The effect of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), peroxydisulfate (PS), hydrogen peroxide (HP), percarbonate (PC), and chlorine as oxidants in UV-based processes was first evaluated. The two processes with the greatest removal efficiency were determined as UV/PS and UV/PMS. Then the operating parameters for UV/PS and UV/PMS were optimized by the Box-Behnken Design (BBD). Process parameters for both processes were oxidant dosage, initial pH, and reaction time whereas system responses were chemical oxygen demand (COD), UV254, and color removal efficiency. Under optimum conditions in the UV/PS process (pH 5.54, PS dosage 24.4 mM, and reaction time 117 min), COD, UV254, and color removal efficiency were 83.21 %, 92.14 %, and 93.87 %, respectively. Under optimum conditions in the UV/PMS process (pH 5.83, PMS dosage 23.1 mM, and reaction time 120 min), COD, UV254, and color removal efficiency were 66.89 %, 78.45 %, and 96.89 %, respectively. The R2 of all the models that applied for the system responses of both processes was nearly one and the adj R2 values were very near to the R2 values. These findings showed that the BBD is efficient, suitable, and significant in modeling the removal of pollutants in textile dyeing industry wastewater by UV/PS and UV/PMS processes. Electrical Energy per Order (EE/O) calculations for UV/PS and UV/PMS processes were 101 and 167 kWh/m3 for optimum conditions, respectively. The results showed that both UV/PS and UV/PMS processes are effective; however, the UV/PS process is more economical and effective concerning pollutant removal efficiency and EE/O calculations.

An experimental look into efficient quaternary Bi5O7I/Bi(IO3)3/Bi2(IO4) (IO3)3/BiOIO3 photocatalytic composite

The prototypical toxic dye rhodamine B (RhB) is perhaps one of the most abundant pollutants in industrial wastewater. Its efficient photocatalytic degradation through composite photocatalysts is crucial for environmental remediation. Here, we synthesized quaternary Bi5O7I/Bi(IO3)3/Bi2(IO4)(IO3)3/BiOIO3 bismuth iodate composites through facile hydrothermal and solvothermal methods. The coexistence of multiple bismuth iodate phases was confirmed by x-ray diffraction analysis, room temperature Raman, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The desired chemical states of Bi, I, and O inside the composites were confirmed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Field emission electron microscopy revealed flower-shaped nanosheet morphology for the composite synthesized at 120 °C, whereas randomly shaped nanoparticles with an average size of 80 nm were formed in the composite calcined at 400 °C. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy further corroborated the existence of multiple phases in the composites. The diffuse reflectance spectroscopy confirmed the optical absorption edges of the composites to be located within the visible range of 1.68–3.16 eV. The flower-shaped quaternary bismuth iodate composite demonstrated 100% degradation of RhB dye within 40 min of optical exposure. This quaternary bismuth iodate composite is suitable for solar harvesting-driven toxic dye remediation.

A study on the economic loss estimation of industrial wastewater pollution discharges in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration

ABSTRACT This study focuses on the industrial wastewater discharge of 27 cities in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration. It selects five water pollutant indicators from industrial wastewater discharge, including chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), petroleum pollutants (PP), and major heavy metal content (HM). A shadow price model for industrial wastewater discharge pollutants in each city of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration is constructed, and empirical research is conducted using government-provided statistical data. The study reveals that the economic losses associated with industrial wastewater discharge in the 27 cities of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration range from 5.9296 billion to 6.448 billion yuan. Shanghai demonstrates the highest economic losses caused by industrial wastewater discharge, surpassing 0.45 billion yuan annually. In contrast, Anqing city experiences the lowest economic losses, approximately ranging from 93 million to 104 million yuan per year due to industrial wastewater discharge.

Compound Similarity Network as a Novel Data Mining Strategy for High-Throughput Investigation of Degradation Pathways of Organic Pollutants in Industrial Wastewater Treatment.

Identification of degradation products and pathways is crucial for investigating emerging pollutants and evaluation of wastewater treatment methods. Nontargeted analysis is a powerful tool to comprehensively investigate the degradation pathways of organic pollutants in real-world wastewater samples but often generates large data sets, making it difficult to effectively locate the exact information on interests. Herein, to efficiently establish the linkages among compounds in the same degradation pathways, we introduce a compound similarity network (CSN) as a novel data mining strategy for LC-MS-based nontargeted analysis of complex wastewater samples. Different from molecular networks that cluster compounds based on MS/MS spectra similarity, our CSN strategy harnesses molecular fingerprints to establish linkages among compounds and thus is spectra-independent. The effectiveness of CSN was demonstrated by nontargeted identification of degradation pathways and products of organic pollutants in leather industrial wastewater that underwent laboratory-scale activated carbon adsorption (ACD) and ozonation treatments. Utilizing CSN in interpreting nontargeted data, we tentatively annotated 4324 compounds in the untreated leather industrial wastewater, 3246 after ACD, and 3777 after ACD/ozonation. We located 145 potential degradation pathways of organic pollutants in the ACD/ozonation process using CSN and validated 7 pathways with 15 chemical standards. CSN also revealed 5 clusters of emerging pollutants, from which 3 compounds were selected for in vitro cytotoxicity study to evaluate their potential biohazards as new pollutants. As CSN offers an efficient way to connect massive compounds and to find multiple degradation pathways in a high-throughput manner, we anticipate that it will find wide applications in nontargeted analysis of diverse environmental samples.

Multi‐Functional Formaldehyde‐Nitrate Batteries for Wastewater Refining, Electricity Generation, and Production of Ammonia and Formate

AbstractAs bulky pollutants in industrial and agricultural wastewater, nitrate and formaldehyde pose serious threats to the human health and ecosystem. Current purification technologies including chemical and bio‐/photo‐/electro‐chemical methods, are generally high‐cost, time‐consuming, or energy‐intensive. Here, we report a novel formaldehyde‐nitrate battery by pairing anodic formaldehyde oxidation with cathodic nitrate reduction, which simultaneously enables wastewater purification, electricity generation, and the production of high‐value‐added ammonia and formate. As a result, the formaldehyde‐nitrate battery remarkably exhibits an open‐circuit voltage of 0.75 V, a peak power density of 3.38 mW cm−2 and the yield rates of 32.7 mg h−1 cm−2 for ammonia and 889.4 mg h−1 cm−2 for formate. In a large‐scale formaldehyde‐nitrate battery (25 cm2), 99.9 % of nitrate and 99.8 % of formaldehyde are removed from simulated industrial wastewater and the electricity of 2.03 W⋅h per day is generated. Moreover, the design of such a multi‐functional battery is universally applicable to the coupling of NO3− or NO2− reduction with various aldehyde oxidization, paving a new avenue for wastewater purification and chemical manufacturing.

Synergetic Adsorption of Dyes in Water by Three-Dimensional Graphene and Manganese Dioxide (PU@RGO@MnO2) Structures for Efficient Wastewater Purification

The improper discharge of industrial wastewater causes severe environmental pollution and the textile industry’s dye usage contributes significantly to industrial wastewater pollution. Hence, an effective method for removing the harmful substance methylene blue (MB) from dye wastewater is proposed. This method adopts a three-dimensional graphene composite material based on manganese dioxide (MnO2), named polyurethane@ reduced graphene oxide@ MnO2 (PU@RGO@MnO2). First, graphene is prepared with hydrazine hydrate as a reducing agent and polyurethane as a framework. MnO2 nanoparticles are synthesized by the reaction of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) with carbon. These nanoparticles are then loaded onto the three-dimensional framework to create the composite material. Finally, adsorption and removal experiments for MB are conducted to compare the performance of the composite material. The results indicate that the graphene based on the polyurethane framework exhibits favorable mechanical properties. The unique three-dimensional lattice structure provides abundant active sites for loading MnO2 nanoparticles, significantly increasing the contact area between the adsorbent and MB solution and thus improving the adsorbent utilization rate (reaching 94%). The nanoparticles synthesized through the reaction of KMnO4 with carbon effectively suppress the agglomeration phenomenon. Additionally, the introduction of dynamic adsorption and dynamic removal modes, aided by a water pump, substantially enhances the adsorption and removal rates, showcasing excellent performance. The research on a multi-porous three-dimensional structure holds significant practical value in water treatment, offering a new research direction for dye wastewater treatment.

Bioaugmentation of halophilic consortium for degradation of 1,4 dioxane (1,4-DE) and treatment of cosmetic industrial wastewater in continuous stirred tank reactor under saline condition

The heterocyclic ether 1,4-Dioxane (1,4-DE) is a toxic by-product used widely in various industrial activities as a solvent or stabilizer. 1,4-DE was classified as a probable human carcinogen according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) due to its chemical and physical properties. Emerging pollutants in industrial wastewater is the major challenge for the operation of effluent treatment plant. The bioremediation of 1,4-DE is an effective approach to treat the industrial wastewater. The bacterial consortium was obtained from industrial sludge samples, Yanbu, Saudi Arabia and enriched in 1,4-DE supported basal salt saline medium. Biodegradation of 1,4-DE was studied at several concentrations ranging from 200 to 1200 mg/L. Complete mineralization of 1,4-DE from 200 to 800 mg/L was achieved in 4 to 8 days at 4% salinity. 1,4-DE utilization was studied at different salinity (4% and 6%), the results exhibited complete mineralization of 1,4-DE at 4 days and 6 days respectively. Increase in salinity to 8% displayed 92% degradation of 1,4-DE. Addition of yeast extract accelerated the biomass production correspondingly reduced the time required for biodegradation under saline condition. The bacterial consortium showed the ability to degrade 1,4-DE completely at various range of concentrations. Lab scale continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) was used to evaluate the industrial wastewater treatment efficacy of the bacterial consortium under saline condition. CSTR operated for 36 days displayed chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and 1,4-DE degradation of 96% under saline condition. THF (Tetrahydrofuran) which accelerated the degradation process of 1,4-DE was completely degraded in 28 days. Bacterial analysis with high throughput sequencing technique confirmed the existence of bacterial strains like Ochrobactrum (45%), Marinobacter (21%), Stenotrophomonas (16%), Pseuodomonas (9%), Sphingomonas (4%), Bacillus (3.5%) and Sedimentibacter (1.5%).

Unlocking the power of public awareness: paving the way for sustainable wetland management in Anzali, Iran

The Anzali Wetland, located in the Guilan Province of Iran, is a vital ecosystem with significant ecological value. However, it faces numerous environmental challenges due to pollution, habitat degradation, and unsustainable resource use. This paper aims to assess the awareness and perceptions of local communities regarding the Anzali Wetland, Iran, and its management and how these factors might influence the implementation of the CEPA program. A quantitative survey based on a structured questionnaire was designed and administered to local communities within the wetland’s watershed. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicate that local communities have limited knowledge about the wetland, often associating it solely with Anzali Lagoon. Despite this lack of awareness, most participants recognize the wetland’s importance in conserving wildlife. Further, participants identified domestic and industrial wastewater pollution as the most significant threat to the wetland. Additionally, education at the school level, the Internet, and virtual networks were perceived as effective means of raising awareness among the local population. The study highlights the importance of increasing public participation and interaction among different social groups to enhance awareness of the wetland’s value and environmental issues. It also emphasizes the need for coordinated efforts among stakeholders in wetland management and policy-making, including government agencies and civil organizations. By examining the significance of public awareness in the Iranian context, the study provides unique insights into wetland conservation efforts in a specific geographical and ecological setting. Furthermore, by considering the perceptions and opinions of these stakeholders, the study offers a holistic understanding of the diverse perspectives and interests related to wetland conservation, which adds depth and richness to the analysis.

Iron and Molybdenum Isotope Application for Tracing Industrial Contamination in a Highly Polluted River

Rivers adjacent to industrial zones usually suffer from severe pollution issues. Industrial wastewater that has undergone sewage treatment processes may be legally discharged into rivers under water quality permits. Previous studies have frequently employed isotopic tracers to identify potential contaminants for pollution control. Conventional radiogenic isotopes utilized in tracing studies cannot discern whether the source is untreated (primary) industrial wastewater, which can have serious impact to the environment. By analyzing the iron (Fe) and molybdenum (Mo) isotopic compositions in original industrial wastewater and treated effluent, this study aims to investigate whether the heavily polluted Agongdian River is contaminated by the untreated wastewater. Based on the results from this study, the original industrial wastewater exhibits higher concentrations of metallic elements and heavier Fe and lighter Mo isotopic compositions, compared to the treated effluent. Consequently, it appears that Agongdian River water indeed exhibits evidence of untreated industrial wastewater. Furthermore, the volume of original industrial wastewater entering the river can be estimated from these results. This research offers a more precise and accurate approach to monitor potential industrial wastewater pollution in natural water bodies, contributing to the goal of environmental protection and sustainable development.

Oil/water separation copper membranes modified by laser induced ZnO nanowires growth with enhanced catalytic function

Oil/water separation is a significant area of scientific study, and also has significant practical applications in the treatment of industrial oily wastewater and oil spill pollution. In this study, the high-flux copper mesh is fabricated by laser in a Zn2+ precursor solution at room temperature. The copper mesh processed inside the solution has a higher flux than that processed in the air. The heat absorbed by the liquid promotes the growth of ZnO nanowires on the copper mesh surface. The copper mesh's underwater oil contact angle (OCA) is as high as 150°. Compared with conventional copper mesh, it has a higher stability and can maintain a contact angle of 150° in acid-base environments and high-temperature environments. It has hydrophilic and oleophobic properties and can be used for oil/water separation. After 50 oil/water separation cycles, the separation efficiency can keep higher than 97%. This new method exhibits excellent potentials for oil/water separation and oil purification attributed to its simple and ecologically friendly processing.
